If I had to compare itch with something that I was confident you’re already familiar with, I’d have to compare it with Steam. Just like Steam, itch provides easy access to a huge collection of games – with one key difference. What sets Steam and itch apart is that the latter focuses just on indie games. itch is the go-to place to find indie games.

itch is available as a desktop application for Windows, Mac and Linux; the app was released in December 2015 and offered support for all three platforms right from launch. Alongside the itch desktop application there’s the itch.io website, which was released in March 2013. Both the desktop application and the website provide easy access to a collection of more than 40,000 games and items.

To get started with the itch desktop application, you will have to perform two tasks. Task number 1: download and install the application on your Windows PC. Task number 2: sign up for an account and log in. There is something very important that I should bring up here: the itch desktop application is completely optional. Unlike other game stores which force you to use their desktop client, the itch desktop application is completely optional. You can get any game you want from the itch.io website, without having to mess around with the itch desktop application.

The itch.io website and the itch desktop application have a similar interface. That’s because the application embeds the website and, where necessary, it adds a few extra options. You could say that the desktop application’s interface is a more streamlined version of the itch.io website.

If you’re a gamer, you’re going to like itch because it provides easy access to a huge collection of games – just indie games, in case you forgot. If you’re a developer, you’re going to like itch because it is an open marketplace for independent game creators. Thanks to itch, you have a convenient means of distributing your game to the public.

Some the of the best indie games can’t be found on Steam because they’re on itch! itch is like Steam, but for the indie crowd.

Pros

The itch desktop application is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. The desktop application’s interface is similar to the itch.io website, but more streamlined. Use the itch desktop application to browse a huge collection of indie games, download or purchase indie games, and manage your library of games. The itch desktop application is completely optional.

Cons

None that I could think of.
